Course Description:

7th grade Basic Writing- Students refine and build on previously learned knowledge and skills.  Students construct a piece of writing using specific organizers and outlines.  They revise tier writing based on their knowledge of sentence and paragraph construction, word choice, adding detail, and active verb choices.  Students edit their writing based on their knowledge of grammar and usage, spelling, punctuation, and other conventions of their written language.  Students will work towards producing final, error-free pieces of written composition.  They will read a novel and be able to share and discuss within our classroom.  ***

7th grade Reading- Students will learn to read for the basic meaning of the text.  To develop an initial understanding of what they read, students must be able to do three things:

  1. Use context and other word-identification strategies to help them understand the meaning of the words they read,
  2. Recognize important supporting details, and
  3. Understand the main idea of a selection.

Understanding literary elements, making connections between events, characters, and other elements of a story, knowing about a story's characters, setting, and problems, comprehending and processing material from a wide range of texts, and knowing the purpose of the written text they are reading will help students become independent readers who move beyond the literal meaning of a text to gain a deeper understanding needed to think critically about what they read.

8th grade Basic ELA-Students refine and master previously learned knowledge and skills in increasingly complex presentations, reading selections, and writing.  The course involves the study of terms and themes in various types of literature, such as poetry, short stories, nonfiction, and novels.  Eighth grade students present written and oral reports, including presentations strengthened by visuals and media.  ***

7th grade Basic Math-Student will use proportional relationships in number, geometry, measurement, and probability; apply addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals, fractions, and integers, and will use statistical measures to describe data.  Students will build a foundation of basic understandings in number, operations, and quantitative reasoning; patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking; geometry and spatial reasoning; measurement; and probability and statistics.  They will also use technology along with other mathematical tools such as manipulative materials to develop conceptual understanding and solve problems as they do mathematics in real-world contexts.  ***

8th grade Basic Math- Pre-Algebra prepares students to enter the study of Algebra 1 (a high school credited course).  Students will become familiar with the following: the properties of mathematics; the language of algebra; solving one step and two step equations; adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing rational numbers and integers; solving inequalities; graphing equations and inequalities; proportion; percent statistics and graphs; probability; applying algebra to geometry; measurement; and the study of polynomials.  ***
